SURFACES & FINISHES

When using tile as a wall, floor, or vanity surface finish material, the type of grout used will affect the performance of the product. They should be non-porous and easily cleanable to resist mold and bacteria growth. Products requiring adhesives such as wallpaper and vinyl risk warping and peeling if moisture penetrates the material. If adhesives are required, read the label carefully to determine if the product is water-resistant and meets the Low or no-VOC standards established by the Green Seal program.

WALL FINISHES

It is better to use water-, latex- or plant-based products. While some plant-based paints contain terpenes, a VOC derived from plants, these wall finish products will not contain toxic pigment elements or use herbicides or fungicides during production. Learn more

GROUT TYPES

When using tile as a wall, floor, or vanity surface finish material, they type of grout used will affect the performance of the product. In areas susceptible to high moisture levels, sealed or epoxy grout is recommended. Epoxy grout contains resins that resist mold and bacteria growth and withstands frequent cleaning. It is durable and crack resistant. Sealed grout performs well if resealed every two or three years. Use sag-resistant grouts when applying tile to vertical surfaces to ensure your tile and grout lines will adhere securely to your wall.

SHOWER ENCLOSURES

The most durable shower enclosures and tub surrounds are seamless, one-piece products. They are non-porous and easily cleanable. Fiberglass enclosures can be purchased in a variety of forms to fit nearly any shower or bathtub. Where a tile shower enclosure is desired, install a water-specific paperless sheetrock specifically designed for wet/damp areas as a backer board. Cement backer-board will not rot, but will wick water to studs unless it is sealed.
